I'm having trouble starting my super major, I have fuel to the injectors, they test ok, fuel pump has been rebuilt and is timed correctly,it will fire on a squirt of starting fluid, but will not start or run on Diesel..(??) we are currently suspecting it maybe stuck rings although there seems to be good compression, we are running out of Ideas,..does anyone have any suggestions?

58 tow.. Have you fixed the timing yet?i.e No 1 on compression stroke, flywheel on 21 degrees btdc [if mechanical governor type] and fuel injection pump timing marks lined up.
Service manual..I & T shop service, published by Intertec Publishing, P.O. Box 12901 Overland Park
KS 66282-2901.
Engine will not start. other causes. Fuel lift pump faulty,Air in pump or lines,Filters clogged, air cleaner dirty, pump out of time, low compression.Pump control rod stuck in closed position, throttle plate in intake manifold not opening, starter not turning engine fast enough.faulty injectors.

normal cranking speed 200rpm,current draw 450 amps.recharge battery. try again, could indicate lazy starter, may need repair.

Thanks for the Ideas, timing has been checked it seems ok, put marvel mystry oil in each cyl. and I'am letting them sit for awhile, just in case I have stuck rings, the fuel pump has been over ridden with an electic pump for now, so its getting plenty of fuel, the starter does spin the motor slowly though what remedies are there for a starter that will not spin the motor fast enough? new starter? extra battery? new connections and wires?...thanks again

Remove one injector, and free up the line, so it can be connected back up, out in the open, out of the head, and crank the engine, and see if the injector is "injecting". DANGER--- keep ALL body parts out of the high-pressure fuel spray!

If the injector "sprays", I'll bet you have the pump timed wrong, probably "180 degrees out".

Another possibility is that the cam timing is "off".

I would not remove the injector and check live. This is dangerous, if any fuel gets in your skin you will most likely loose the limb or even die if it gets into the blood stream. Do not mess with high pressure systems.

There's NO possiblity of injury is he keeps his body parts out of the direct closeup range of the fuel spay, while cranking the engine over, as I already warned him.

Keeping at foot away from the nozzle tip shouldn't be TOO tough!

I agree with Bob. Its only dangerous if you put your hand or other body part directly in the injector spray very close to the nozzle. Its no more dangerous than a pressure washer.

Thanks for the cam timing idea Bob, we thought of it briefly, but over looked it because the timing cover looks to have been untouched, is it possible for it to jump cam timing? ..I've been reading past postings on this issue(seems I'm not the only one with this problem)my tractor has had a head gasket replaced, fuel pump rebuilt, rebuilt injectors and has been sitting for a while during repairs, could it be that I have compression, but just not enough? maybe just a couple of stuck rings?(is this even possible)it sure seems like it has good compression , it turns over hard, and draws on the battery pretty well, I also had the starter checked, they cleaned out fillings and said it was ok.

I agree with Bob. I think the pump timing is probably 180* out. The timing marks will line up at 180* out. There is a pinch bolt that holds the pump coupler on. Is it on the top or the bottom when the marks are lined up?

It should be on the bottom. Take the coupler apart, turn the engine 180* and put it back together, and set the timing again. It should run then.

I meant to say, turn the crankshaft 360* which will turn the coupler 180*.
