My Dad just purchased a 4WD super major. It is restored but not quite right (new gages & headlights, etc.) We don't think there were very many of these made and certainly not many left. I'm trying to surprise him with any info I can find. Thanks for any help.

It has 4 equal size wheels with 2 external drive shafts. The front says Super4. Dad collects the Dagenham tractors (Majors & Dextas) but we thought this was something truly unique. One man said there weren't more than 25-50 made.

There was one of the twin drive shaft 4wd rigs parked by the road for sale in Wilmington Vt. last year. I don't know where it has gone now however.

Myself, I have a pretty nice E27n gas Land utility, but not 4wd.

yes this would be a county super 4, built I think from 62 to end of 64,there were quite a lot of them produced and the company exported to over 160 countries, these tractors are becoming collectable but parts can sometimes be a problem. The company was called county commercial cars of fleet in hampshire UK,they went out of business in 1983.where are you located?

We are in central Pennaylvania. He's planning on taking this tractor to the national Fordson show in Portland Indiana as well as some local shows.

Annes When is the fordson show? I also would like to get some info on the four wheel drive majors, the ones with the smaller front tires. also the tech. on them like gear raitos and tire size. I have heard that some of them used GMC army axels.Would like to find a transfercase for one and convert mine. I do a good bit of fab work so other than the T case and a few other parts and info. It could be done I could make a GMC axel fit under it fairly quickly.

The show in Portland is an all makes show which attracts a lot of folks. I have not been to it, but have talked to a number of people who have and they say it is worthwhile. It is Aug 20 - 22. The books I have read indicate the 4WD such as the Super 4 also used WWII GMC axles & transfer cases but as I have just gotten this one, I haven't had a chance to verify that yet. There is a tractor show at Penns Cave - east of State College PA over Labor Day weekend. I will be at this one as I am already committed for the Ag Progress Days at State College during the same time as the Portland show this year.

The tractors that use the GMC axle were built by "Roadless". They have a transfer box that is mounted between tha main gearbox and the back axle housing. They have one driveshaft and smaller front wheels. These conversions where available on Fordson Majors, Power Majors and Super Majors. There was also a "Plough Master 6" based on the Super Major but with the six cylinder 590E engine. On the Super Major version the diff lock only works on the rear axle.

The County Super Four and Super Six (six cylinder) do not have a transfer case. They have modified bull gear shafts that transmit power to two drive shafts down each side of the tractor. The front hubs have modified Fordson Super Dexta crown wheel and pinions, one each side. All of thses tractors are Super Major based so the diff lock works on both the front and rear drives.

I recomend you buy Stuart Gibbards book and video (PAL format, most modern VCRs plac PAL and NTCS) on the County. Old Pond Publishing, should be available on the net via www.amazon.co.uk.

I am very inbterested in getting hold of any material I can on the Super 4. I am getting a copy of the Stuart Gibbards book on County Tractors, but would like very much to get a manual on the tractor and any info on parts sources you may be willing to share. This is my 7th Fordson.

Hi Anne, could you possibly put a photo of your tractor on the e-mail, so that we can identify properly. We have manuals which we could photostat and send you. We can also supply parts, some in our own stock. We have also owned one of the Roadless Fordson Power Majors which we converted with a 590E engine. If we can help you we'd be only to pleased to. We are also a member of the Ford/Fordson Club in USA and have met and stayed with Jim Ferguson in Ohio. Regards Leo

I will take a front and side photo and try to get it posted. I had it in a parade last Saturday and it got a lot of attention. As do many Fordson's, it blows oil out of the crankcase vent so at the end of the parade, I had a good bit of cleaning to do. As it does not have the poweer steering unit which should be on it I got a good workout. I definitely have to find one and get it mounted on it.
