I am seeking advise from wiser people than I. I have an 85 Case 448 without a motor and also a 1970 Datsun 1.6 liter(about 97 cubic inches)with only 9500 original miles. So I am considering putting this 4 cylinder on the Case garden tractor. I have a high mechanical ability but I am wondering if I do this will I be tinkering with it all the time to get it to run right? Someone told me I would need to put a govenor on the engine to contain rpm variations. Also the Cases drive is hydraulic which is not as precise as a true hydrostatic. The hydraulic pump is near the steering wheel shaft. The 60" mower deck is belt drive on this one. boydhauls@yahoo.com

Add a belt driven govenor to the Datsun which can be found on a lot of old gas fork lifts, or even a gas powered commercial mower like the Toro 327 or 345. By limiting the rpm to 3600 you should be developing around 20-30 horsepower. Then you may want to get about an 18gpm hyd pump and a hyd motor for the mower deck. Run the hydraulics though the hyd pto valve for the mower deck and you should have one smooth unit that's a little heavy on the front tires. There are websites like Link that can help match up the hydraulic componets better. Good luck, it sure does sound like a fun project.

I have always thought it would be possible to use a cruise control setup for a governor using an engine that does not come with a conventional governor. Maybe the pickup magnet for the cruise control speed sensor could be mounted on the crankshaft pulley, to keep it out of the way and to fool the cruise control into thinking it is going down the road at highway speeds. Most cruise controls do not work at slow driveshaft speeds I would suggest a kill switch to take the place of the brake light switch that would normally be used with the cruise control.

I had a Datsun 510 with a 1600. It was a powerful, fast little car. As I remember, it liked higher RPM's. I would figure a flywheel RPM target and then build my drive pulley system to get the right hydraulic pump speed. I would use multiple belts, unless you like changing belts often. Good luck with your project. If you can get it to work right, you will have one hot garden tractor!

Sounds like a great project.Run the Hydraulic pump off a belt that runs it at about 3600 rpm,add another pump and put a hydraulic motor on thr deck.I have been considering something along this line on a 444.

I think the redtractorman has the right idea. A pulley is the way to slow down the pump to 3600 and keep your rpms for power. I like his idea for the hydro run mower deck also. You mention hydraulic verses hydrostatic. Have you ever driven a true hydrostatic drive. I think you will be suprised that the results are very similiar when confronted with a load.

Boyd here. Your input has been very helpfull. I will be putting on a regular lawnmower engine on my Case 448. Yes I had visions of that little 4 cylinder motor on it. Maybe with chrome exhaust stacks proclaiming their muscular prominence straight up into the blue sky. The funny looks, the turned heads, the guys in pickups slamming the brakes and backing up to get a better look as they see me out mowing the lawn. My ventures in delivering pizza at night are not turning out to be very profitable. In the daytime I have a lawn service that I do part time. I decided that I would be tinkering with a 4 cylinder conversion much more than would make sense for my lawn service and handleing in and out of ditches and hills would be a handfull. The rigid and politically correct which are plentifull here around the Twin Cities of Mn, would maybe be frightened by such a contraption roaming about their unfrozen tundra, shooting grass clippings sideways 20,30 or 40 feet. Oh the missed joy. Maybe someday when I have more time I will put a V6 on a walk behind snowblower just for the fun of it.
