These are pretty tough tractors and engines. Check the throttle butterfly shaft on the carburetor for any wear between it and the carb body. This will make it idle rough and allow some dirt into the engine if worn bad. There is a short rubber hose between the engine breather and the back side of the air filter housing. Check that it is not cracked or torn and that it is properly installed in the breather and the housing. If it is cracked, this is a path for dirt to get into the engine. Listen for any knocking noises in the engine which could be a worn connecting rod. These engines shake alot at lower speeds so check the rubber engine mounts for wear. Other areas to check are loose steering linkages and if the transmission oil/filter have been serviced.
