I'm thinkin bout buyin a cub cadet with a 20 hp kohler magnum in it. Then engine has 1000 hours. Anyone know when a rebuild would be necessary? Are magnums any good? I've only had experience with a 14 hp k321 and it was one good engine. Are the magnums as reliable?

magnums are the best motor that kholer has in my oppinion.i am a garden tractor puller and i have used a 10hp magnum and a single cylinder 16 magnum is in it now and they run great and last a long time.that engine will last to about 2000 hours on average if all its done is mow lawns.

2100 hours on a 20 mag in a Cub cadet and still running strong. Compression was 100 per cylinder last oil change. Have changed oil and filter every 25hrs and only used synthetic in it. Might have to add 5 oz of oil between changes..

I agree with Lucas, 1500 hours is getting to be rebuild time for them. Mags have a problem with dirt getting in the cylinder fins and blocking cooling, so you want to blow them out every once in awhile. They do suck the gas. Rebuild parts are pricey compared to the older single K-series engines, and aftermarket parts are limited. That said, I mow with a CC 1811 with Mag 18, and I like it. Gutsy engine.

magnums are good engines designed to run 1500-2000 hours before overhaul, but its realative to the maintenence it has recieved.we,ve had them come in with 400 hours and were worn out for neglect..the magnums are ruff and tuff but not as fuel efficient as the newer commands.. lucas

1000 hours doesnt seem like much. The Kohler engines are very good, dont know about the magnums in particular though.
