I have a 19.5 hp Briggs in Craftsman riding mower.
The engine is surging when not under load. I know
the problem is in carburator. I took off air filter and I can see it shooting liquid in venturi when it misses. I had some water in tank
and I cleaned that out and put on new filter. I put some B-12 carburator cleaner in fuel and it
stopped but it started up again. It will do this and then run fine. I have looked at manual on
engine and it tells how to adjust, but mine has only adjustment for idle speed. Anyone out there had this problem. I would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks

Sounds like you still got water in carb.

Add 1 entire can of B12 to tank. Run engine until the tank is near empty. Replace the fuel filter again. Then refill with fresh gas.

Isn't an entire can a bit much? You might want to mix more in line what what the can says. I have always had better luck removing the carb and using carb spray to clean out gunk and varnish.

The other thing you might want to check is the governor. I have an older Tecumseh which surges all the time when not under load as the governor "searches". It has been doing this for three years but when engaged it evens out and runs well. I probably should work on it, but I have other things that won't run at all that demand more attention.

It might seem like it but the idea is to keep the engine running long enough to get all the water and crud out. For those who aren't ready to tackle removing and replacing a carb, B12 is a cheap and error-free way to get the job done.

The problem with the Tecumseh might be related. It sounds like a vacuum leak. They are often caused by someone reinstalling a carb with a wrong/cracked/dirty/torn gasket, no gasket at all, or wrong bolt torque.

Thanks to all of you for your input on this problem. I sprayed some B-12 down down the jets
and other holes on top of carb. The jet in the carb. that is spraying the fuel in has stopped
dribbling fuel and is atomizing like it is supposed to. Engine is running fine now, but I
did this before and it started up again. I guess
there is still some water floating around somewhere. I am going to keep going with the B-12
both in the tank and the spray if this keeps happening. I was wondering what some of you know
about this motor. I have had good luck with it
other than this water problem. Also what do you
all think about B-12. Just wondering what other
people think and use.

Thanks to all.

B&S makes great engines. If you take care of them, they run forever.

B12 Chemtool has saved my backside more times than I can count. This is why I share it with others.

Here's what I do. First, I NEVER drain gas from any piece of equipment in spite of them being stored 6 months each year. I just fill the tanks to the top each fall to keep the condensation down. This also keeps rust from forming in tank.

In the spring I siphon off a bit of gas and add B12 to the top of the tank. Anywhere from a couple of ounces to a whole can depending on the size of the tank. I let them sit for a couple of hours and then they fire right up. They might run a little rough for the first couple of minutes until all the water and crud in the carburetor's float bowl is replaced. Then they purr like a kitten.

Oh yeh, B12 in the spray can will knock down any nasty flying insect like wasps, etc. instantly. Just be sure not to breathe the stuff!

Is there any reason not to add B12 to the tank in the Fall?
