Problem with mower deck PTO; sometimes have to slow engine speed, engage PTO, then speed up engine so it engages properly. Is this an expensive fix?? Also, tractor has 1200 hours, well maintained, uses no oil, no smoke at all. Is the engine due for rebuild?? Sound like a good machine??/ looks VG cosmetically.

Doc - The simple answer to you question about the pto clutch would be to give it a blast of air and then set the air gap.

Adjust the air gap on the PTO clutch to 0.018" when the unit is cool. The clutch has three spring-loaded adjustment nuts. Beside each nut is a slot. Slip an 0.018" feeler gage into one of the slots and adjust the adjacent nut to affect a slight drag on the gage. Go to the next nut and slot and repeat. Several adjustments at each location are necessary to fine tune the gap, because when you adjust one nut it affects the other two.

Aside from that, your problem might be electrical. How's your battery? A weak battery can do wierd things. I would also check the purple wiring leading up to the clutch for any indication of burnt insulation. If the clutch is bad, it's usually much easier to replace the entire unit rather than rebuild it. Although the coil portion can be replaced. Either way, it's not cheap.

Hopefully, your problem is either the air gap setting or the battery. Good luck. - Dave
