Hi All:

I replaced my Murry's 12 hp with a 18 hp briggs I bot off of ebay. The engine arrived with a bent and broken oil drain pipe. I believe the engine was tipped during shippping. Anyways I replaced the oil drain pipe and refilled with the right amount of oil. It will start but for only a second or two and then sputter to a stop. There is a good amount of oil splattering out of the exhaust pipe which I'm sure is due to the engine being on it's side during shipping. I've removed the plugs and cranked the engine to remove any excess oil but it still won't run. Any suggestions? The guy who sold it to me swears it ran fine prior to shipment and I tend to believe he is truthful

Thanks,

Stergil

It's now running!!! I put a new set of plugs in it and it started although it was still sputtering. I then checked the choke and found that when I put the cable on I didn't quite have the butterfly fully open. A quick adjustment and now everything is fine. Thanks for everyone's input

Sounds as though you may have carb problems, put new plugs in it, get a squirt can with gas in it, start tractor, when it starts to die, squirt gas in the carb, it if continues running, then you have a fuel problem. If it is a fuel problem, see if it has a fuel shutoff in bottom of carb, make sure it is clicking when you turn the key on, if it is working, take off carb, it maight have got a little oil in it when it was rolling around in UPS, anyway, take carb cleaner and spray it out, then see what ya got. If you need anything else, let me know, I will tyr to help ya out as best as I can.

I also bought an 18 hp briggs vertical shaft
Ran good for a short time then stopped
After much checking, turned out the float in the carb had a small hole in it (float sank after running short time) so motor stalled. (smoked black then stalled) Tried to fix but could not got a new one from dealer, only 6 or 7 bucks

Do as Dave said but also, did you check to see if you have spark ? Sometimes in swapping engines wiring can be different (even though wires can be same color or plug stlye)and you can short out ignition. Oil in cylinder may cause you to change plugs a couple of times before it all gets burned out.

Strgil,

Check for fuel first, if you cranked it over with the plug out you should have ridded yourself of the oil problem. Change the plug chek the fuel and let us know.

With mine, it has an electronic gas shut off. There is a wire going to the carb. Therefore, you must have the ignition on to check and see if it is getting fuel.
