I cannot get any advice or help from MTD on the power loss from the belt driven mower, a 1994 Montgomery Ward 18.5 46 inch garden tractor.
The engine runs well and when I let the clutch out it engages like you would expect it to but almost immediately the drive seems to begin to slip and it loses ground speed while the engine keeps the same rpms. If you "pop" the clutch it speeds up but soon slows down.
If anyone can offer a suggestion I would really appreciate it!!!

Same problem on a 12.5/42 MTD 669/Lowes/Lawn tractor. I've replaced front & rear belts and xmission & engine pulleys. Still have belt slipping in mid-range speeds (1, 2, 3, & 6, 7 okay but 4,5 slip badly) usually between front belt and engine pulley. Any coaching on which of the three springs or variable speed pulley would be appreciated.

Hi Hank,it's me again.Just read your reply and thought of something that may narrow your search.Inspect inside of tractors drive belt.If it's shinny(got a glazed over look) a pulley somewhere isn't turning.eighter the variable speed pulley, or a idler pulley,or maybe your belt is rubbing on a belt guide(but if this is what it is you'd be smelling rubber burning).Anyway it could be simple as your belt being stretched. They do that from time to time on any brand or model.(cant'really be helped.)Let me know what ya find.

Thanks for the suggestion. The variable pulley is the one that moves back and front as the clutch is released? I will check it but from the top it looks like it is spinning. If this is not the cause I expect it to be something like that. The motor runs well but it loses ground speed until the clutch is popped again. It will run on flat ground for a while then it will slow down when starting up hill. Pop the clutch and it is off again. I got one reply to get the serial # from the axle. I can't find it but I will keep looking. I hope its not the transmission. Thanks again.

Your Transaxle is a single speed axle, The pulley is a splined pulley, thats the pulley on top of your transaxle, like mike said it has to be a belt that is worn out, or a spring on your variable speed pulley is worn out. I don't see where the transaxle is giving you any problems.

Looks like you guys are on to something. While the belt looks good it has worn more than I thought I need to find out how to replace it but I did it with my old Murray and it was not too hard. Thanks again!!
