I'm looking at a Bolens 12 hp 3spd , dual range. It's fairly cheap, but the PTO needs repair (throws belts) and the main drive also throws belts. Is this typical or a common failing that I should stay away from? I don't need it , but I'd like to play around with it if the repairs aren't too difficult or costly. It has a Tecumseh engine . How does it stack up against other models of that era? Any info on this model( unique, worth having or a dog, etc) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

My bolens did that also belts from car parts store won't stay on pulleys to thin. Went to bolens dealer their belts are thicker no problems.

Check the idler pulleys. Check for forward and back movement of pto also. These get worn out and will push belts out of line. Good old tractors. Also, once it has thrown belts a couple times they are pretty much junk - time for new set.

I have the exact tractor you are talking about, yes mine was throwing belts until I replaced it, and it has not come of yet. Great little tractor.

If its a G12:
Drive belt is 35", PTo 43", they are normally 1/2". Get the "blue" power belts, spend the extra money. I have a 1973 G10, not much difference. Very reliable. Tecumseh makes a great engine manual for this.(HH120 engine model) Lots of online sites sell them, about $10. Sony's has an online diagram/parts manual free to download.

Hi Dave

You should be talking about a G-12, mod.1255,
12 hp tech. engine. Usually these are great units but they almost never throw belts if the
belts are even close to the right size. Trace the belts and make sure the tension pullys are
OK and in the right place. More info will sure help
Enjoy spring

Model number would help. Sounds to me like someone put the wrong belts on.
