I have a Sears garden tractor with the Kohler Twin (25HP) CV-725S engine. If cold, when I start it I get BIG puffs of white smoke for a few seconds then it clears up. Seems to run strong. Any idea what causes this? Also, I have noticed that after running it for an hour or so and shutting it off, when I restart it 10-15 minutes later it puffs blue smoke until it gets warmed up again. Last time it did it I thought perhaps the air cleaner was clogged so I removed the air cleaner while the tractor was running - no difference. Doesn't seem to use oil at all.

I have not figured out what causes this, have several units that blow white smoke at start up and these are brand new units. Been told the new Kohler commands need quite a few hours to break in,so this is normal, ain't quite biting on that one, though.

I would have a hard time believing that 90 hrs isn't enough to break it in. The other thing is that it doesn't happen every single time and, when it does happen, the amount of 'white' smoke varies.

Say, I got a 23hp model gt3000 they call it. The manual and I think also in the video say its normal to smoke a bit after it starts. I know some people swear by Kohler but thats my first. I'm not impressed. My oil is clean but I know smoke either white or blue isn't good. I can understand it on a radial piston aircraft but not the garden tractor. I'm wondering about the service life of these engines.

White smoke = water (in the gas).

Blue smoke = oil (it doesn't need to burn a lot of oil to make a lot of smoke). If this is an old engine, I wouldn't worry about. If it's newer, I'd have a shop look at it... something is not right.
