I have a 318 john deere hydrostatic drive that dont keep the constant ground speed. the motor speed stays the same. but ground speed varies to the point that I have to keep 1 hand on the the control at all times. The fluid is at the right point. Whats wrong? Patrick

Patrick - There are three different linkage setups on the 318, depending on the year of manufacture. Most of them have a beveled washer that keeps tension on the hydraulic control lever. To gain access, remove the right side access panel on the pedestal. Inside, you should see a hex head bolt ontop of the beveled washer. Tighten the bolt, but not too much, otherwise you'll make moving the lever difficult. This is a trial and error adjustment and may take a few tries to get it where you want it. If you have any difficulty, please re-post. - Dave

OK, well, that's a different deal. I thought he was experiencing speed changes with handle in fixed position. This can happen on an incline or downhill if the tractor is a little tired.

How many hrs? There's a lever under the right rear fender to allow manually pushing the mower. Is it in the correct position?

Patrick, Your shift linkage or the neutral adjustment cam may be worn. If you have a tech manual it will tell you how to adjust or replace. Good luck, John
