I have a JD 316 mower that i'm going to sell, it's got 692 hrs. UPS man stopped and looked at it and seemed to disbelieve the hour meter, said surely it had more than that. I bought it new in '88. he also asked me what is the difference in it and a 318. I didn't know but a freind has a 318 and said that the 318 has 2 hyd levers and that is the only difference. Can anyone tell me the differences and is 692 hrs unusal for a '88 mower, also what is a fair price, as it is in excellent condition? Thanks, Nat

Nat - 692 hours on a 1988 is relatively low. I mow 1-1/4 acres in the summer, plow a 95 foot double drive in the winter, plus spread fertilizer, and plug aerate with my 318, and I average about 50 hours per year. My '92 318 (I'm the second owner) has 495 hours on the meter right now, and that's a bit below average.

The Onan engine was designed for service of 2000 hours. Some make it that far, some don't. Much has to do with how well they are maintained. They are no more or no less reliable than other small gas engines.

The 316 has a robust frame, like the 318, and shares a lot in common. However, the 316 does not have power steering, only has one hydraulic spool valve, and does not have split or dual brakes. Also, the 316 did not come standard with an hour meter (it was an option), and the 316 did not have a "reserve" for the fuel system.

Price varies upon location, condition, and market. A 316 with the hours you've indicated, in excellent condition, in some markets would bring close to $2000. Other areas, maybe $1500. You can always come down in your price; pretty hard to go up.

You know, it never fails. People NEVER want to give you what something is worth, and try to discount the value by casting dispersions. Stick to your guns and good luck selling the 316. - Dave

I sure would like to see a B43 or B48 series engine that can consistantly run 2000 hours, I have never seen one in 25 plus years.

The main differance is the 316 has no power steering, the 318 does, the 316 only has one hydraulic outlet on the front. depending on the type of care taken, 692 can be about the death time for 316/318 JD tractors. The average person in Central Illinois will mow 30 times a year, if it takes you 1 hour to mow you yard that is 30 hours a year, it is 16 years old, with that in mind you weuld have 480 hours, so it is very easy to only have 692 hours on it. fair price, my opinion only!!! $1200-1500.00. I know other will say different, but that is what I would offer for it if I were to trade for it, or sell it on my lot.
