Looking for some advice on an 18hp Roper, 46"mower deck,4'snow blade, 55lb ea wheel weights, and chains, including manuals. It apperars to be in the 80's. The tractor looks in good shape with newer paint job. The seller has to small of a lot for this tractor. (he has owned for 6 months, never used blade)He is asking $1700 CDN, OBO (Newmarket, Ontario, Canada)
I am looking for something for an acre lot for grass cutting and an impliment for snow removal. Driveway is fairly steep to the garage then wraps around side of the house. Any advice or comments would be appreciated!!!

I am assuming that the tractor has an 18hp onan engine that is horizontal shaft. It is the same as the 18hp Sears tractors of that year, (roper made them for sears). They do not make parts for these anymore, but they are alot available used. It"s a heavy duty tractor with hi-lo range gear tranni. I am not sure which plow you have but the manual lift type are really tough to operate on uneven surfaces.

1,700 is about 1,300 US Dollars.

Do you know the hours on it? What is the condition? I only ask because those engines are expensive to repair. Stay away from something that looks beat or smokes alot.

Assuming it is in good condition, then 1,700 CAD is a slightly high price. I would try to offer around 1300 CAD.

Mike

Just talked to the seller who told me that it has a Briggs & Straton 18hp engine. The mower deck is also new. I know that roper made mowers for sears but he said that it is an MTD Roper?
He also said that the Roper MTD parts are available. Maybe more so here in Ontario, Canada

Am I getting something reliable???

Unless I am mistaken, Roper was one tractor company, bought out by American Yard Products. MTD is MTD always has been, probably always will be. Never heard of an MTD/Roper. So I guess he needs to clarify, is it a Roper or MTD??? The old Roper tractors were as good as John Deere, Cub Cadet, Etc, top of the line tractor, MTD is an MTD, no two ways about it.

Take a look at the photo gallery under the garden tractors link on the bottom left of this website. Search for roper, and you will see 2 roper 18 hp tractors at the bottom of the list. If the tractor looks anything like this, then it has the onan engine. And it is the same as the sears type. So you should have no trouble finding used parts.

If the tractor is not like these, then it is most likely not worth anything close to what they are asking for it.
