My 316 with an Onan engine suddenly blew out its entire oil supply in about 1 minute. After removing the PTO I found a plate that seems to be a side of the crankcase. The five bolts that hold it on were all loose. Tightening them seems to have stopped the leak. What should these be torqued to? They only have flat washers on them. Is this a common problem? It sure made a mess of the front of the frame.

Also, OT, I am posting this from the library because about 4 months ago this site stopped accepting posts from my home computer. I have installed a newer browser and even turned on cookies but no luck. Any suggestions are much appreciated on either topic. Thanks in advance.

The plate you're talking about is actually the rear main bearing plate. The engine is mounted with the rear to the front of the tractor. The correct torque is 23 to 25 ft. lbs. This is not a common problem and they use hardened flat washers. I would suggest that the gasket be replaced as oil pressure is fed to the rear main bearing through a hole in the gasket and you may have future leakage. If you remove the bearing plate, be careful of the crankshaft seal as it is very easy to cut it on the key way in the crankshaft. There is also a separate main bearing thrust washer which you will have to make sure stays on the locating pins during re-assembly. The easiest way is to apply a small amount of chassis grease to hold it in place.
