hello all. i'm new to the JD's. i picked up a fixer upper a few weeks ago. it was minus muffler, gas tank, grill and seat. i made a muffler got a grill and seat and bought a used gas tank. i have the service manual but other than gallons it gives no dimensions for the tank. the fellow i got it from says it's the right tank. it fits in the cradle fine but sits tight against the inside of the hood, i'm thinking it might rub through the hood after awhile. is there supposed to be clearance between the ends of the tank and the hood? is this the wrong tank maybe? also one more question. when i start the tractor the gen light stays on. i'm not too much on charging systems. when i increase the engine speed the light gets brighter. i'm guessing that it is charging but something could be wrong with the regulator. am i headed in the right direction? thanks, greg

It's NORMAL for the tank to be a CLOSE fit (read TOUCH) the insides of the hood.

P. S.

I think you"re on the right track suspecting the regulator.

First, verify that it has a good ground. Most likely it has rubber mounts, and there is a ground lead to "jumper" around the rubber mounts. Verify the lead is present and unbroken.
