I have a 17 hp opposed cylinder kohler that developed sudden and huge oil leak while mowing. It didn't make any unusual noise before the deluge of oil but I did detect a slight engine miss for a short time. It hasn't used oil in the past and has been very dependable engine in my Simplicity. The oil appears to be coming from the back side of the engine where the drive shaft attaches to the flywheel. Any Ideas from the forum on what can be the problem or experiences with a similar problem will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds as if though your oil seal on the magneto side of the engine(aka under the flywheel went south, You might also check for cracks while your under there!!

Not really just check the block over good under there for any cracks, look carefully around the raised area that holds the seal to make sure that there are no crakks. also taking some emery paper to the shaft before removing the seal will help greatly in removing and replacing. Rememebr when replacing the seal the best way would be to find a length of pipe that will fit over the shaft but rest on the seal make sure it extends beyond the shaft and take a 2x4 or other peice of wood and lay it over the pipe and try to tap directly in the center to assure even entry of tha seal!

8 HP Kohler in reply to Robin Barnard, 05-20-2005 07:17:22
I have a small Kohler that I just honed and re-ringed. It will start and run in idle position and then I can advance the throttle and it runs just fine. But if the throttle lever is up at all, when I try to start it, it will not start and just keep cranking. As soon as I put the throttle to idle, it starts. The choke works fine as it only needs a little on the first try. Playin with the mixtures does not help this problem. They set up nicely at about the 1 1/2 turns position. Runs fast smooth and idle smooth.

Thanks, Hal in Florida

Any Kohler I've ever had starts better at the idle setting. It probably has to do with the ACR.

So idle the darn thing down, and crank it up! Be happy!
