i have a 718 grasshopper mower with a 18hp briggs and stratton v-twin I/C. i let my brother use it yesterday and it caught on fire. because of the dumb engine design that lets grass accumulate by the muffler. so he poured water on the fire to put it out, which wasnt a good idea. so now it sounds like its running on one cylinder and has no power at all. but if i pull one plug wire or the other it doesnt run at all. if both are on it runs, but its bad. i originally thought water might have gotten into the magneto but its on the opposite end of the engine water was. so now im out of ideas. if any one can help it would be helpful. TIA

Do you have a compression tester? Ok, don't test compression but take the hose that goes into the spark plug off. Now remove the valve in the end of it. Now hook it up to an air hose (leave air pressure off)

1. Roll engine up to TDC compression stroke on LH cylinder
2. Use breaker bar to secure flywheel from moving
3. Remove the dipstick
4. Put the hose into the spark plug hole and dump the air into it. (Hang on tight)
5. Where is the air coming out? how much?
5a. Carb? Intake valve
5b. Muffler? Exhaust valve
5c. Dipstick? Head gasket or rings? Keep in mind a little air is normal. They make gauges called LEAKDOWN TESTERS that give you an actual reading, but you are more likely to have a compression tester than a leakdown tester.

If overheating caused the fire?? Could have loosened one of the valve seats in the block?Remove heads to check and see.Pouring water on hot block could have caused a crack also,Check everthing carefully?? My .02

the motor wasnt actually overheating. it was the grass building up around the muffler that started on fire. im goin to do a compression test tommorow and see what that says.
thanks

matt
