I have a 318 JD with the 18h.p. Onan.I was mowing with it last week and it just died.It wouldn't even light up the dash lights or even try to turn over.I tried another key switch that looks similar. It would start, but die if I moved the hydrostat stick off of the safety switch,or if I would try to turn the p.t.o on.Also, with this key switch the battery light stays on,and the engine will die if you pull the battery cable off.I went to my JD dealer and got a new key switch. It will do nothing again! The seat safety switch had been bypassed by the previous owner and I checked the wires. All looks fine.Any help appreciated. Thanks

Something simple thats often overlooked, they're are 2 fuse holders under the dash, near the battery. I've seen many that used the round glass fuses go bad (the fuse holder itself), and cause connection problems. check them, and try pushing them together.

It doesn't sound like you're getting power from the battery to the switch, then to the rest of the places that need power. I'd start at the battery with a test light, and follow the power wire, and it should lead you to the problem.
