Ok Guys,

I went and screwed up with my hydro transmission. My tractor is 18 years old and out of warranty. My trans begin to slip and overheat. The trans fluid would then expand and foam out of the fill cap under the seat. JD wants $437.00 for a new rear end. I thought I would drain some fluid out of the trans and put in some Lucas trans treatment for old slipping and overheating transmissions. When I went to put in the Lucas, it would not flow down into the hydrostat unit. It just filled up the filler spout neck. Now the tractor won't move an inch.

How do they get the trans oil into these?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dick

I would probably take the hydro off and see what is worng with it, they are very easy to work on, and you might be able to get the parts to fix it, instead of the 408.00 for a new one. You might get into it and find out you have a key sheared in the drive gear. Your fan is still on the transmission pully isn't it?? this will cause heat and failure/shutdown.

Yes the fan is still there and in very good condition. There is no leaks anywhere. I have taken very good care of this tractor.

Did not mean any disrespect by the comment, I see these hydro fans broke quite a bit, they are plastic and the blades flex and after years of use, they will start chucking the blades and even though it may not look like much, these little fans do a lot to cool the hydro. Hope it works out for you, seen you had it back up and going again.

Dick, to get fluid in them you can take a small fuel line, put it down your fill tube and fill it that way, you are blocking the vent when you put oil the way you are doing. Lucas trans treatment is not going to help at all. This is basically a hydraulic pump, has not valve body, bands, or such like an auto transmission has. What did it do when it would quit?? Did it howl or anything like that or just start to low down? Do not attampt to run this tractor until you get oil in it, it will die out from lack of lubrcation. Also check your belts and idlers.

JT,

It would howl a little bit but maily it would just start slowing down.

Thanks

Dick

Sounds to me, like a plugged filter. But you could try jacking the thing up, putting the drive lever/pedal in the highest (as if you were going the fastest) position, and turning the wheels by hand to see if the fluid moved.

Boog,

Thanks for the reply. Is the filter accessable or am I in for a new rear end?

Thanks

Dick

I don't think that unit has a filter.

Does the hydro look like the diagram linked below?

Bob,

Thanks for yours and the others for their reply. Yes my trans is as shown in your diagram link. I guess from what I hear from all of you that I will need a new trans. Like a dummy I did not read page 42 of my owners manual which states "DO NOT CHANGE FLUID OR DRAIN AS THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE"

Thank all of you for your inputs

Dick

Sorry for the late response here, but like others said, I'd open it up and look inside; you may be able to salvage it. I am not sure for your exact model, but some have 'internal' filters that can be cleaned or replaced if you open it up. Also, you "CAN" change the fluid unlike the manual says if you are careful to get it filled and bled BEFORE you try to use it again. It sounds, though, you may have already done some damage, but I'd still look inside to see if anything can be repaired - you have nothing to lose now.
