Can the subject engine (40H777-0241, Intek) be started without being attached and wired to the tractor? Fuel does not get to the carb from the pump, so I'm wondering if the fuel pump may be electric. I replaced this engine with a new one as the owner didn't think he needed to add oil. Blew a rod and did a little damage to the cylinder wall, but the rings clear the broken piece caused by the rod busting. I no longer have the machine on my premises and trying to start it off a saw horse. Just thought I'd ask before buying a new fuel pump. Appreciate any advice.

I think it has a vaccumm pump, the pump runs off a hose off the valve cover (if it"s like the ones I"ve worked one before). It should have a solinoid on the bottom of the carb that needs 12 volts. Other than that you don"t need anything. Use the coil ground to shut it off.
