Help, I thought that my JD 214 had too much steering wheel play so I wanted to adjust it before putting the snow blower on. I did as the book said, removed the drag link, loosed the two nuts on either side of the steering box, took out the cotter pin and turned in the adjusting plug. The steering was so hard to turn that I did it over again, and again, and now the adjusting plug nut is out farther than when I started and it still steers like a ten ton mack withoug power steering. What did I do to it and how do I correct it. thanks, Alex (it has been greased by the way)

You may need to replace the bearings in the steering box. They are cagged by a plastic holder which may have failed and you have loose balls floating around in the box. I recently did this on Dad's old 140.

Or, the adjustment may have been loosened too much, allowing the balls to get out of place.

If that's the case, the retainers may not be damaged, and it may be possible to clean the parts up, put the balls back in place, along with a little heavy grease, to hold them in place during re-assembly.
