My Deere 317 amp meter jumps all over when I start the tractor. The battery is overcharging and goes dead after sitting a few days. Before I replace the battery I want to track down the charging issue. Any suggestions on where to look first?

Take a VOA, check the AC output on the regulator, it should be 30-45 volts AC. The ac leads are the two coming out from under the flywheel. If you have this voltage, check the DC output at the battery, if it is putting out more than13.5-14 volts you may have a bad reulator, but it sounds more like a bad battery.

You may simply have a bad battery that boils when it's charged, and goes dead when it isn't being charged, or the voltage regulator could be bad.

After sitting overnight, the battery should read about 12.6 Volts, after running the tractor for a while, likely it should be in the 13.5-14.5-Volt range.

Check it out with a voltmeter, and post back.
