I need help guys. I have an 18 hp Briggs motor on a Poulan Pro Riding Mower that won't run. While cutting grass after setting up all winter, the motor suddenly sped up a little, then went dead. You can recrank it but it won't stay cranked. It makes a popping sound like a 2 cylinder engine would sound hitting on only one cylinder....kinda like an old John Deere 1010 sounded. However, it is a one cylinder engine with the overhead valve. It will run about 10 to 15 seconds, then go dead again. It never idles up during that time. Just barely runs. You can recrank, but same results. I flushed the carberator with carberator cleaner, checked the plug and took the breather off. Nothing has helped yet.I admit, I am no mower mechanic. Could this be a valve adjustment problem?

Could be the rocker arm,a bent push rod,or valve not closing due to carbon.Remove cover over valves and check. Good Luck..... ....
