I recently purchased a 1970 Blue/White Sears SS12 with loads of attachments including the 3 blade mower deck and the snowblower. After giving the mower deck a good cleaning and grease, I finally hooked up the mower deck and tried starting the tractor. The problem I'm having is that the tractor wont start while the mower is engaged. I assume that there is a way to "disengage" the mower belt until after starting the tractor? There's a small lever near the right floorboard that is disconnected but I assume is to disengage the mower but not sure where it connects too. Can I manually disengage the mower or is it meant to be on full time? TIA for any input.

Thank you all for the quick and informative responses. From reading your replies I now know that I'm missing the "mule drive" that is hooked up to the lever. FYI I started the tractor and let it warmp up a bit. Then I installed the mower deck and it started up immediately. WOW does that beast make noise! It cut the lawn beautifully! Since I have 2 acres of Lawn to mow this is a huge asset. I cant say enough about these great little machines. For me it has been a life saver! I paid close to $500 for my very good condition SS12 and my neighbors busted me over it but worth every penny to me since it came with so many attachments. So far I use it to haul around wood, rocks etc. Plowed with it during winter, rear-plowed and rotortillered a new lawn with it and now mowing! Now the neighbors want to borrow my machine all the time lol. The huge snowblower attachment I will try to figure out next for winter. As for the missing Mule drive part I'll look on ebay and other sources to see if I can find one. Thx again for all the help. Regards, Tom

see the photo in the link:

The lever just above the right floorboard controls the mule drive. In the photo...it is up, which slides the mule drive forward tightening up the belt.

tom on the mower deck is there a mule drive that slips into the front channel of the frame then the belt is hooked up on the engine pulley.the clutch and brake are on one side and on the other side does it look like a lever to push in to engage with your foot.if so if i remember right to engage the belt you push it forward with your foot and to disengage you push down on the other end of that foot lever.is your setup like that or am i way off base from the one you have.don
