Here is the deal, I started my little tractor (185 hydro) and let it run. In the mean time I started the M tractor and got to moving things around with it. Forgot about the little tractor mower running and it ran out of gas and drained the battery. Yes- Call me dumb names I deserve them.

So I bought a new battery which was a little bit bigger. Went from a 270cca to a 340cca because that’s what the had in stock. Put gas in it. It turned over a few times and then it quit turning over and then quit getting juice. The lights won’t turn on and it doesn’t turn now. Any thoughts on what I’ve burned up?

The battery is brand new just a little bit bigger than the old one but should be fine for this thing.

Thanks for the advise, I will look at it tonight. Scott

Is the battery fully charged?

Check the connections at the battery, and at the other end of the cables. I worked on one a couple of years ago that would sometims crank, sometimes not. The problem was a poor connection where the battery ground cable was attached to a motor mounting bolt.

Then, using a test light, verify there is power at the large terminal in the starter solenoid, while you are holding the key in the "crank" position.

Post back, and let us know what you find!

I went to the barn last night to look at the little tractor mower and the battery is good and the ground is solid.

I put a light on the positive cable where it connects to the starter and nothing happened but the volt meter said it was getting juice.

There was also a fuse (20) which looked fine. Not fried.

The other day when I left it, none of the lights would come on when I turned the key to run. Last night on my first turn of the key...the lights (on the dash) came on but after I turned the key, no lights and they would never come on when the key was turned to run.

Any other suggustions, thanks in advance.

You grounded one side of the test light, and touched the probe to the large battery cable terminal on the starter, and the test light did NOT light, correct? But using a voltmeter, you had voltage there, right?

Doing the test with the light, the test light HAS to light, or you have a battery, battery cable, or connection at one end of a battery cable problem.

Ok this is what I found over the weekend.

Everything above is correct. However this little tractor has got some years so I went ahead and put new positive connector on it because it was corroded.

Still nothing. Volt meter still showed movement when the key was off. Turn it to run and nothing. Turn it further to start and nothing.

checked all fuses and good. Took ignition switch out and cleaned it it up, not arced and looked ok.

Went through all the wiring and the answer turned out to be a connection to the the throttle near the front of the engine. It was simplely loose and needed secured. Redid the connection and the little mower runs good now.

Thanks for your help and guidance on how to start looking for the problem. It did help me concentrate on the electrical part and not the starter part. Thanks Again-
