I would not repair the Series 1 engine. I would look for a good running series 2 KT17 or KT19. Or find an M18 Kohler twin. They should bolt right up (same block as the KT). They are usually found in Sears GT4000 and Snapper twin tractors. You might have to use the clutch from the sears or snapper because the pto shaft might be a different diameter.

Barry,
I thought of doing the same think. I got to talking to some of the guys that’s tried it around here. You have to do some altering in the mounting brackets for the other type engines. Briggs Vanguard a good engine. Got one in my generac generator 19 hp.

I decided to go with a new Kohler series ll engine. I have two 317"s I just bought another one a year ago it had the series l in it still.
My other 317 that I have for 26 yrs now is a series ll engine that was put in back in 1980 still running today but getting a little tired.

The series 1 I took out is still a good running engine just that I have a few hills to mow and didn"t want take any chance of ruining a good engine. This photo of the 317 everything is original on it except the mower deck. I did paint it when I put all new bearings in. It had only 400 to 500 hrs on it since it was bought new back in 1981. The guy took real good care of it!... The series ll Kohler"s don"t come cheap now. they just went up in price a few months ago. I bought mine from Small Engine Warehouse in Dunkirk Ind.
They even used this picture in the John Deere Repower under 317 on there website.
Just my 2 cents. Mike
