I have a post hole digger with a chain saw motor on it. It suddenly lost alot of power, about 50%. I have 90lbs of compression, and the carb checks out OK. Someone said something about a reed valve for the intake getting burnt...anyone know anything about 2 cycles?

Thanks

make sure of your fuel also ! sure ya grabbed the right can of mix ? or did ya add gas only? if mix is off can make it run hot and heat up towards seizure temperature .

Suggest you pull the mufler and make sure the exhaust ports are not plugged up with carbon

'Sudden' loss of power is a symptom of broken reed valve. Reed valve prevents back flow of intake air from crankcase when piston pushed down. Intake porting is in effect like a full race cam in hot rod- low RPM back flow until valve closes- the reed valve is the parrellel to the intake valve at that time but with a truck grind. Half the intake charge spitting back out would give you the 1/2 power running you described, but still start and run fair at reduced power. Some 2 strokes depend on reed valve only in the intake- no piston porting. a 4 petal reed that breaks 1 petal would still run, but again at reduced power. RN

Jeff: Since the reed valve is on the intake side for your engine (are you sure it has reeds?), I doubt if it's burnt. Now, broken maybe. Did it lose the power when you were using it? It may have suffered a mild piston seizure. 2 cycle engines are very easy to work on - First thing I would do is take off the head, run the piston down and check the cylinder walls for scoring. If that looks OK, then pull the carb assembly and check the reed valve to see if it IS broken.

first i would check the spark plug if you did not already. It could be fouled. Second the exhaust could be clogged, or third, if there is a fuel filter in the gas tank or hose, either could be clogged or broken. good luck.
