Well, I finally got tired of my riding mower having no power. This mower came with the home I bought here 2 years ago and it's never run right since I got it, but it's been getting progressively worse. So, I put the compression tester on it last night and found 85 psi on the right cylinder, only 25 on the left. When I removed the left cylinder head, I saw the exhaust valve seat was moving up and down with the exhaust valve. So, I removed the engine and tore it down.

I suspect a replacement valve seat wouldn't help much, so I took the block to a machine shop. They're going to flycut the block to put a slightly larger seat in, then grind it to match the valve. Also, they're going to do a valve job on the others, and hone the cylinders for me (there was no ridge to speak of on the cylinders; the pistons pushed out without any resistance or damage to the rings).

I've got all the gaskets and seals, and have new piston rings on the way.

Of course, I forgot to bring the camshaft with me. I guess I'll get the camshaft to them tomorrow so they can set the valve lash.

So, it comes down to a couple simple questions: What is the valve lash supposed to be on these engines? The machine shop does primarily automotive work and probably won't be able to find the spec for this. Also, what should the ring end-gaps be when I reassemble this thing?

Thanks in advance.

Ring end gap reject size is .030" compression rings and .035" on the oil ring. I like to see .012 to .015" on a rebuild.

OK, I found the valve lash (.006-.008 I, .009-.011E).

But I can't find the ring end-gap number.
