I just rebuilt a 18HP twin. This is from memory, but it should be close;

gasket set: $35
piston rings: $35
Machine work: $140 (included replacing 1 exhaust valve seat, refacing all valves, setting valve lash and honing both cylinders)
New flywheel key: $3
Paint for engine: $10
Ring compressor: $12 (the only tool I needed that I didn't already have)

So, call it $250 after all is said and done. Replacement engine would have been a grand, and now this one runs as good as new.

If yours is a single, your costs should be similar but rings will be less and machine work should be less.

Good luck.

Oops, should have added;

If you don't already have them, download the Briggs & Stratton manuals if you can so you'll have part numbers for the items you need. Makes it much easier when it's time to buy the parts, whether from your local dealer, from Sears, or from B&S directly.

JT had asked if I knew it was locked up! (YES) The grass had gotten ahead of me, due to the weather, at this time of yr it does"nt grow up much, but it sure gets thick! I had just finished, and was coming out of the big yard onto the driveway, when I could hear metal coming apart! shut her down and went back an hr later and the thing will not turn one bit! by key or by hand on the drive pulley!

Ya might also look and see if the flywheel or charging systme came apart if you "heard" metal coming apart, that is another problem we run into on Briggs engines.

I just finished a complete rebuild on a 1978, 8hp, 190000 series B&S for about $275 including the kit ($75), machine shop costs to bore and refit the valves, and buying some piston ring tools. I got the Hayes Manual from the library...a big help. It took me about 16hrs to do. It was my first small motor rebuild. Turned out great.

OK< do you know for a fact the engine is locked up? Briggs engines have a habit of either filling the cylinder full of gas, and you get a hydraulic lock, or the electric starter gear will get locked in the flywheel and lock the engine up. A couple of common things to check.
