My engine (model 422437 type 1209 01 code 89062312) would only run fully choked, and had no power. I have replaced the fuel filter & fuel lines, ruled out the gas cap, sprayed the carb with cleaner, and used the carb adjustment screw-which will keep it running, but with no power...it dies as soon as I engage the mower deck. I checked the B&S website, but it didn"t help. I don"t know anything about carb rebuilding, and can"t find a diagram that shows that carb. I"m wondering if I should be looking at the valves, or find someone to work on the carb (it appears to be one unit with the intake manifold) External fuel pump seems to be working ok. Any advice would be appreciated.
Rick

Someone once told me...

If you have to pull the choke to keep the engine running...check first for water in the fuel.

In my case I drained All the fuel in the system, replaced all the fuel in the system, and I was off and running in minutes.

Had a similar problem. Mice chewed the coil wires. When you have the carb off check the coil and wiring. Also check the dipstick gasket (base of dipstick at block)if this is deteriorated engine will suck oil and contaminate the filter from the inside. Pre filter will look good but you wont be pulling enough air into the carb. Check for oil inside the paperfilter

I'm thinking ignition. Have you replaced the plugs? Do you get a good strong BLUE spark on a plug held against the head?

Usually an engine requiring choke fully on to run means a leak in the carb sucking too much air in. Sounds like a carb rebuild is in order.

I was going to check the compression, but B&S does not supply #s. Any idea what range the readings should be in?

Are you getting a full flow of gas at the carburetor? I was thinking there be be something in the gas tank blocking the fuel flow.
The main jet may be plugged in the carburetor. Hal

I can't find a diagram for this carb, or a parts list. Is there an easy way to check the flow at the carb?

Give B&S a call at 1-866-436-7387. They should be able to furnish a diagram for your carburetor.
You will need all the engine numbers that you posted on here. Hal
PS: Try jackssmallengines.com too, they have a lot of parts or can get them.

I tested the compression-approx 100psi dry on both cylinders...also checked fuel flow at the carb, looks good. I got the carb off, and if I can't get info from B&S, ,I guess I'll have to have someone rebuild it. Any idea what that would cost me?

Call around to your local lawnmower repair shops.
They can give you a price. There can't be very many parts in that carburetor. Your main jet must be plugged up with dirt. Isn't there an inline filter before that carburetor? This unleaded gas is bad for creating that varnish residue. I use a fuel stabilizer since I don't drain the fuel from anything. My snowblower had
that varnish like buildup in it and I sprayed it with carburetor cleaner. It does a good job. Hal

I tried the carb spray a few times with no change. I took the carb off...I'm going to soak it in cleaner, order a rebuild kit...will attempt it myself. I'll keep you all posted.
