Hey guys, searched everywhere and can't really find a decent answer and thought I'd try here. I have a 1997 Murray 42" rider given to me from my father who used to mow 1 1/2 acres many of times as his house was built on an old horse farm. In 2003, he pulled it out of his garage and I took it home to S. Florida where it continues to cut only 1/2 acres now every two weeks or so. It's had a lot of grass cut and have fixed a few things on it recently like the deck brakes, transaxle linkage (being loose) and the crankcase gasket (along with oil seal, pump gasket, etc), which leaked recently.

It's got the Tecumseh OHV 17 engine and still runs fantastic with that oil smoke out of the exhaust puff at startup every time (never fails). Engine runs great, not a real problem with the mower except for that whole gasket deal but the engine never starved of oil (caught it in time).

My question is ... I've used this mower for the last 3 years and just the other day, it started to vibrate. Not while the blades were turning but while the engine was running. To the point where the desk was just vibrating and while mowing, my feet started to feel numb as they rested on the deck while cutting.

My question is ... since this is different from what I'm used to, am I expecting this engine to start giving out? I actually watched the stack pulley shaft and it wasn't vibrating at all ... the only thing I could see was a slight variation of the track in the lower pulley of the stacker pulley (that comes off of the crank). VERY slight ... I ordered a new one just in case ... but why would this happen all of a sudden? I didn't hit anything that would have smacked up against it. Am I looking at the wrong part or is there something in the ignition, etc. that could cause similar symptoms?

Thanks for any help or guidance.

Check engine mount bolts, then other bolts/nuts on pulleys, blades. RN

Is this a twin cylinder?

You may have one bank offline (plug, coil, etc...)

Thanks, Larry. It's a single cylinder.

Check your transmission drive belt, it might have a chunk out of it and that will cause a sudden vibration to start.

Please assume that there is oil in the engine as I've check it every time I start the engine and, I read and it may seem misleading, that gasket was fixed and there was plenty of oil in the engine when the problem was found with the gasket. :)

Allan: Question? In replacing gasket was engine shaft horizontal or vertical. We have to many of these engines around the farm. When repairmen messed one up and I had to do it over, I do whatever ever since. Why I ask is it is important the balance gears are in sync on crankshaft or engine will vibrate. Shaft should be horizontal when side cover with gears is slipped on. Make sure engine is top dead center with both valves closed. Slid side cover on with gears on side cover. These gears balance bored (three holes top side) they will easily align them selves correctly so long as bottom of oil case is level under horizontal crankshaft. Hope this explains it. If this doesn’t take care of vibration, holler and I’ll get Library book references that’ll help you, for you. Fernan
