Approx. 2000 Model Craftsman with 20 Kohler. Carb is hunting. No adjustment seems to help. Haven't had carb completely off. First time it did it I sprayed carb cleaner in intake with motor reved. This helped for a while. Lately nothing helps. Don't know much about this type of carb. Anyone familiar with these carbs got suggestions.

Kohler 20hp carb? Check if it is a Kohler or Walbro carb- some twins had Walbro, same basic design and mounting but the Walbro had a couple soft plugs instead of screws to jet/passage areas. This means getting a plug probe and reseating tool kit to remove plug to get to cleanout air passages completely. Some singles also had Walbro- decent carb, just manufacture shortcuts for OEM cost control make it a little less adjustable/servicable in field. RN.

When an engine is NOT loaded and hunts normally the IDLE circuit is not passing enough fuel to the engine. These newer carbs are set so lean the passage plug easily. I have, and you need to know WHAT you are doing, used the small numbered drill bits(#61 thru #80) to enlarge the mixture passages in a carb so the mixture jets will have some adjustment if the idle mixture is adjustable on this carb as I have not seen one yet.

does it do it do it all the time or at certain engine RPM? if it does it at no load rpm, this is kinda common on Kohler commands after they get a little age on them. If it does it at all rpms, load or no load, you will need to take off carb, clean and rebuild, somethimes that helps, sometimes it does not. let me know a little more info on what it is doing and then I will see what I can do.

It hunts under no-load. Speed it up and put it under load and it runs like a sewing machine. If you pull the throttle back easily it will continue running at about half speed and will hunt like the dickens. If you pull the throttle down to a slower speed suddenly, it will most surely die. As for the air flow, it will hunt even with the air filter removed.
Let me repeat. It does not hunt at full throttle and under load, only when you reduce the speed.

Tuke,
That is a common problem we run into all the time on the newer Kohler command engines. We have taken them, cleaned, rebeuilt, clean the high speed jet, I eman, looks spotless, still wil surge under no load. We have reaplced the carb on one, it solved the problem for about a year, then ti was back to the same thing. If you do put a new carb on it, make sure you get the correct fuel filter for the command engine, there is a differance, and you do NEED to use the correct filter.

O.K., I'm sitting down in front of the tractor. The hood is off. The air filter is off. I'm looking down the barrel, so to speak, of this carb. Somebody tell me if there are adjustments that can be made other than idle speed.

there are no adjustments to the high side, there might be a little screw in the top of the carb to do a little adjustments, but not much. This is a fixed jet carb, so it is a rebuild or replace thing.

Thanks, JT. Right off-hand, do you know what comes with the rebuild kit for these carburetors. I have had that screw out on top and it looks scored to me. Would this have much or an impact and would it cause the hunting?

Tuke,
Sorry for the delay, weather has been fun this week, and I run a lawn mower shop and chain saws and generators have kept us hoppin. But as for what come in the kit, not much. A new needle, the gaskets. Not much else is servicable. As for the top screw, no if it is scored, will not cause the surging, it will just casue erratc idle. If I recall correctly, this has plate on top the carb with a bunch of little passages, that can get dirt in them and need cleaned. You can also take out the high speed jet, take a small drill bit and clean it out, that will help some. But the most important thing is to get a tag wire and some carb cleaner, some air and clean it all very well. that can help, but we have had to replace a couple of carbs to get them quit surging. Good luck

Thanks again, JT. I have had that plate off that you talked about. Didn't find anything in all those little passages. I'm not in any hurry, but of course, nows the time to do it. I live in Tennessee so snow ploughing is not something that I anticipate doing with this tractor.
