Backfiring sounds like timing. Cam could be one tooth off. Could also be a valve not going closed and allowing the flame out the exhaust as it fires. Either way it"s not good as you know.

The B&S website has help available on it if you can"t solve this one. A manual may come in handy here too.

Best of luck

make sure to go just past tdc to avoid having the comp release hold the ex valve open. re-adjust to .004-.006" and it should be good to go.

Sounds like the valve timing is off. Bring the piston to TDC on the compression stroke and see if both valves are closed. Hal

If timing and valve lash are good it sounds like a burnt valve.

Did you replace /adjust the valve ? If not with a higher cam lobe it will probably no longer close properly.

If I were you I would rotate the engine by hand and watch the valves. It seems to me that the timing is the culprit alright, perhaps there is an erraneous mark on the cam causing the timing to be off.

Is it backfiring though exhaust or carb. ? Backfiring while trying to start is usually sign of either out of time or valve problem though as others suggested. Have you double checked these ?
