i have a 17 hp briggs on a yardman riding mower i'm trying to get going. the problem is when i rev it up to around 1/2 throttle it'll run smooth for about 5 sec. or so then slows down to almost stopping then revs back up. doesn't do this when it's full throttle just around 1/2 or lower. and it will die at idle. i replaced the fuel fitler, cleaned out the gas tank, cleaned out the carb fuel bowl and jets. plastic float is good, float needle looks good, new air filter and it does it even if filter is off, i think fuel pump is good otherwise it wouldn't run a full throttle. any suggestions. i tried to do a search but didn't have any luck finding anything on this.

Dying at idle is usually a sign of plugged passages in carb body or a idle mix needle that is set too lean(if carb has),as far as adj of valves if eng a 1 cyl 17hp I can email you a scanned pg from briggs manual(this is for a 14.5hp ohv eng,but probably the same as 17hp)on how to do & clearances,if you want email me at address below psst@sprynet.com

More than likely you still have fuel contaminants in your fuel system. Basically what your engine is doing is running good, then running out of fuel, dieing, getting fuel again, running our of fuel and dieing and so forth. You need to take carb off and find out where the blockage is. This probably is not your issue, but you might also take off the valve cover and set you valves, they have a history of getting out of adjustment after some run time. I think they adjust at about .006 clearance.
