!8 hp twin; Model 422707...Has flywheel built-in alternator. Winding has "tap" to ground. Two leadwires... (a) raw a.c. fed to headlights (thru on/off sw.) and (b) diode in series with leadwire (heat-shrink tube encapsulated).

(b) Feeds 1/2 wave rectified d.c. to battery.

QUESTION: How do they "get away" not using a VOLTAGE REGULATOR/ RECTIFIER unit ????

When a lead-acid battery is fully chaeged and then obtains its "surface charge," any input (even a very small current) is harmful to the battery as all this does at this point is boil the electrolyte....

Considering removing diode and installing an "aftermarket" 12 Volt REGULATOR/RECTIFIER.

Appreciate knowledgeable comments...

After re-reading your orig post, about after market vr,it's probably not worth it,as you noted charging 1/2 wave, alt probably only puts out 1 1/2-3A at max eng rpm, below that current charge drops off rapidly,as your only charging on the 1/2 wave,if you want to go at this full bore try going to briggs website with eng mod & type #S and download a manual for your eng,and look at the 3-4 alt stators & vr for same, possibly you could pickup a part # off you stator & see current rating of same from parts list,if you decide to do an upgrade, with stator & vr I don't think it's worth it,you'll probably be in the $75-$150 range for parts and considering you usually get 3-4 yrs out of battery(lawn tractor batterys have a short life compared to car battery due to vibration) and can goto walmart, sears, home depot, etc and get a new battery from $22-$30 depending CCA,I don't feel it's worth the investment doing an upgrade or fooling with an aftermarket vr,But that's just my opinion, perhaps some of the other guy's can offer an opinion, and as the saying goes-you pays your dollar & takes your chance in the lottery.

El Toro is right about voltage range, what you probably have as I have seen on some briggs 18 hp & tecumseh 8 and 10 hp engines is a 1 1/2 -3A UNREGULATED dc alt output, you'll usually see this on low end tractors that have a dual wound alt,ac for lites, and low amp dc to charge battery,if only used for starting and you don't have an electric clutch, probably done as a cost cutter to tractor mfg,I've got an old 69 12hp kohler on a wh garden tractor with no lites or any elect acc on same & it uses a 3A unregulated supply to charge battery,I agree with you it's not the best way to maintain a battery, but it works.

You need take a volt meter and connect it to your battery terminals and run the engine at 1/2-3/4 throttle. Then see what your voltage reading is at the battery. If its 13.8 to 14.5 volts it won't boil your battery. Your car or truck battery is charged from 14.0 to 14.5 volts and won't boil if the charging volts are in this range. Hal
