I have a 20hp Twin II model 460777, type 2277. It ran fine then just quit. Now it has no compression on either cylinder. I am thinking a cam issue. Anyone else had this problem? I could not find the same problem anywhere on the site.

TIA
Larry

I am with the comment that you have been running on one cylinder for a while because of a broken rod and then the other rod let go. I say this because I traded for a flat twin with a broken rod that would run. When I tore it down the oil slinger was badly damaged from broken ro pieces in the bottom of the crankcase. I can see if this engine had continued to run the other rod would have let go from poor oiling. Pull both heads first to see if either piston is still moving. If they are, with the heads off you can check the valves.

Kent you nailed it. Neither piston moves. I purchased the mower off a man who said he didn't know anything about the mechanical end of a mower and that it was running fine and just quit, but I am of the opinion that it was probably just running on one for awhile just as you said. Maybe he couldn't tell the difference. Now I need to determine if its worth the fix.
Thanks for the quick response from all on the board. The internet is a wonderful tool.

I think you may have a broken cam too or the gear.

When you say no compression, do you really mean none, zero, zilch? If so and it is that way on both cylinders it nearly has to be a broke crank. Never heard of that but who knows.

Yes it actually has none (zero) on either cylinder.

Thanks looks like I will have to get a repair manual and tear into it. The crank shaft turn on the top and bottom so it must be something with the cam.

Hummm, it will be interesting to see what it is. What do you think the odds are for something in there to break and cause no compression on both cylinders? Thinking about it, I think a valve has stuck open on each cylinder. However, what are to odds of that happening at the same time. Do you think you may have been running on 1 cylinder for a while and not noticed, then the other stopped. I doubt it, but possible I guess.
