I have a 1977 Sears, 14 HP/6 speed. I let the neighbor borrow it, came back not starting. Battery is brand new, but it does nothing. The only way I've found to start it it to hook a jump cable from the battery to the bottom of the starter solenoid. I changed the solenoid out with a known good one and still nothing, which leads me to think either key switch or one of the safety switches on the clutch and/or pto pedal. I replaced the key switch last year due to it not charging. It worked fine before I let the neighbor use it.

You may need to jumper those safety switches to see if they're the problem. You need to check if voltage is fed to the solenoid when you twist the key to crank the engine. Could be a defective switch. Hal
PS: I don't loan out any equipment. They can go rent it like I do if I don't have what I need.

So I eliminated the safety switches last night, both of them work as they should. I wonder if the key switch went bad again?
