Hi- Been doing some wishfull thinking about trading garden tractors. I can't help but notice that there seems to be a large number of used 345 Deeres on the market. Is there an inherent problem with this unit and is it a step up/down from my 18 horse 316? Thanks in advance for any input. Jon

The Kawasaki V twin with a single barrel carb is a plug fouling peice of crap. Fighting one right now. At the best of times one cylinder tends to run rich due to manifold design. Much like the old two cylinder Deere models A,B,D,G,H. Those would miss and snort at idle/light loads due to a single barrel carb feeding two cylinders with a 180 degree crank. Some new V twin Kawasakis feature dual barrel carbs. Well duh, Deere did that in 1952. Those Kawasaki's would sometimes have reed valve problems and presurize the crankcase instead of holding a slight vacuum.Oil is forced up the PVC hose into the carb and into one cylinder in particular. Extra oil is pushed past the rings as well. The coils are scrawny little twerts that fail if the sparkplug is fouled and shorted out. I'm looking at other coils with the same primary resisitance. Using a low ash oil like a diesel CF2 intended for two stroke Detroit Diesels will limit lube oil fouling of plugs in gassers.

1st of all I'm the "tech" who found and solved the problems. The guys at the dealer can't see past the symptoms and look for the cause instead. 2nd of all both my Father and myself each own a LX188. His has never a moment’s trouble except for a dash instrument failure. Mine has never had the power or economy that his has. It's also eaten several spark plugs and a couple of coils. That engine could never run right until it had the crankcase under a slight vacuum and the choke blade in the carb wide open. The crankcase reed valve wasn’t set to 8 thou clearance. The carb needed a linkage adjustment to prevent choking the engine at wide open throttle. Just some goof(s) at the factory wasn't doing his job. And the mechanics at the dealer are mostly high school dropouts. This on top of an engine that's more susceptible to fouling than a fuel injected or dual barrel carbed engine.
