The PTO clutch on my 316 is not acting right. It's a 316 with the Onan B43E. Everything is original on it. I cut the mower deck off the other day and it would not start back. The light on the dash came on, but it didn't engage. I set the air gap and it made no difference. There was between 12 and 13 volts going into the clutch. I proceeded to remove it, checked it on the battery just like my tech manual says to, and it will hold a wrench tight when it has power. I cleaned it up and put it back together, adjusted the air gap, going around it several times to make sure it was adjusted evenly. It will now engage, but there is no click like there used to be and when I cut it off it takes it a good while for the blades to come to a stop. There is still between 12 and 13 volts going into it. Also the battery light will come on while mowing, and while the PTO is engaged the bolt in the front of it is magnetized strong enough to hold a 9/16 wrench snugly. I am afraid I am looking at replacing the clutch, which is a pretty expensive piece. Does anyone have any ideas? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with the pto clutch on my Bolans and after checking it completely, I found that the clutch coil field was bad and was starting to short out. I was able to buy just the coil field and that solved my problem.

FWIW, the field coil for the 316 is about #130.00 from DEERE.

I really do appreciate all of the advice. If turning the adjusting bolts down a bit doesn't work I'll just put a new field coil on it. 130.00 isn't too bad considering it lasted over 20 years.

Something to try. Tighten the three adjustment bolts 1/4 turn each. Sounds like the air gap isn't tight enough.

He must not be measuring the air gap correctly, AND the clutch coil may have some shorted turns, leading to it's magnetism beeing weaker, and power draw being greater than normal.
