My 1969 Bolens still runs great even after 38 years, but recently it has begun to burn out the coil after about an hour mowing. It has a 12 volt negative ground system. I have pictures of the wiring diagram from the orginal owners manual for those who are interested. Any ideas?

There are many coils that will work just fine. I've got one old Bolens with a TRA-10D that I put a coil from a 64 Chevy on - back in early 70s. Still works fine. It tended to burn points at first until I installed a ballast resistor. Also got an 800 Bolens with a S7D that I converted, a long time ago to battery IGN - and it too has a GM coil. I've been using it for over 30 years (also has a resistor). Same goes for my Shaw R-9 tractor with a TED, two-cylinder Wisconsin. The OEM coils offered by Wisconsin for your engine were - YF-41A-S1 for 12 volt, or YF-11 for 6 volt. You can buy a generic small engine 12 volt coil with a built in resistor at NAPA. Ask for NAPA small engine parts number 7-01634.

Get the correct coil.

A generic automotive coil does not have the correct primary winding resistance to cope with the unusual dwell of these one-cylinder engines, and will heat up and fail.

If you can't find the correct coil for the Wisconsin, I would THINK a coil for a K-series Kohler would be a good choice.
