Hi Guys

I have a Grasshopper mower with a twin cylinder briggs that doesn"t have any power when the mower deck is engaged.

It works ok just driving around but when you enage the deck it really bogs the motor down and if you try to move it it wants to stall out.

I tried turning the mower deck by hand (with the engine off of course) and it doesn"t turn hard or anything

Rebuilt the carb but it didn"t help

Any help greatly appreciated

Thank you

I second this guess. If it is a horizontally oppossed they were know for throwing valve seats. The engine will start right up and sound fine on a single cylinder but try to use any power and it croaks out. Had that happen on a tractor with snowblower. It took me a full day to figure out what the heck was wrong. I kept adjusting the carb.

I agree with Kent, I would check and make sure it has not dropped a cylinder, these newer engines are needing more and more attention to maintnenace, and if it does get it, it is not a happy engine. The easy way for you to tell is to remove one spark plug wire at a time with insulated pliers, if it has a dead cylinder, it will die when you pull one wire off and still run the same when you pull the oter. It it is not a newer V trin, then it is not the coil, they fire both plugs off one coil, now if it is a v-twin, it could have a bad coil if it has a dead cylinder.

This engine should be one of B&S's OHV engines. Be sure the engine is running on BOTH cylinders. Guy here who mower the cemetery behind the house was having a problem with his B&S power Grasshopper. He had a valve stuck in the left cylinder because of ovetheating. The cause of the overheating was grass sucked in by the flywheel had covered the left cylinder limiting cooling.

If it's a newer Intek, it may have a round cam lobe. Easy way to check is pull the valve cover and rotate the engine. Both valves should move the same amount. You don't need to measure.

ek, you didn"t say how old the engine was, how many hours, what model (Intek, Vangard, etc). There"s some quirks about them. What do you have?

I went through the same thing with a John Deere 111 eleven horse single cylinder.

I did all the tuneup stuff, went through the deck, and finally had to face the fact that the engine was simply worn out and didn't have enough power to run the deck and move the tractor.

I went to John Deere to see about a short block. The parts man told me, "You don't even want to know what John Deere wants for a short block. I can sell you a brand new 12 horse Briggs engine that will bolt right on for $419.00."

The rest of the unit was still in good shape so I went for it. The parts man was right. The new engine was complete, starter and all. All I had to do was unbolt the old 11 horse, set the new 12 horse engine on, bolt it down, put the pulleys on the bottom, hook up the ignition wire, and throttle and choke cables, and fire it up.

Going from a tired 11 horse to a new 12 horse sure woke that little 111 up!

I have a JD 111 too, and the motor is a bit tired. What was the model # of B&S motor that you put in?

Thanks!

Check your valve lash. These engines loose power fast if the valves tightenup.. With .004 clearance they don't have much to loose.

Try replacing both plugs 1st,also check for spark at both plugs, you may be running on one cyl,if spark only on 1 plug, you have a bad coil or problem in ign system.

Check any and all idler pulleys you might have one of them with a bad bearing and that will also cause you that type of problem
