I don"t normally post here but I am hoping one of you can help me. I have a 1994 YardMan 50 inch cut and a 20 hp Kohler I bought new. Its just starting to get broke in but I have a problem - the hydrostat trans was failing - slipping. This is where the problem begins
I pull the trans filter to change the oil and on the filter it mentions I will need to bleed the air from the system???what air?? I then realize I am not sure what type trans oil to use ??
And lastly I am not sure how to get the oil back into the trans??? There is a hose that runs up under the seat and has a red button in it - could this be the fill hose or is this some part of the air bleed. I also don"t know how much oil to add I don"t see anyplace to chack the level??
at ythis point I am desperate - any help would be great. I know its an old mower but I really like it we have mowede thousands of acres together. Thanks in advance for any insight
tom

First, Only use a OEM filter, Some aftermarket filter have anti drain back valve that will restrict oil flow (unit won't drive).

Clean the top of the trans good of any dirt/grass build-up, The vent hose you mentioned is where you re-fill the trans.

There will be a fitting that screws into the top of the trans that this vent hose slides onto, Remove this fitting and fill to 1/2" below the bottom of the threads then re-install.

Fill with any quality brand 20W50 engine oil [yes engine oil].

Once the filter is in place and trans filled jack the rear tires off the ground and block from falling or moving forward.

Start the engine and with the throttle set about 3/4 speed move the peddle from forward to reverse slowly 8 to 10 times, Shut it down then re-check oil level and bring back up to the 1/2" below the threads if needed.

Good Luck
