I have a 18.5 i/c twin flat head that I am having probs starting. the starter wont spin the engine it will barely turn it over even when I jumper it right to the starter with a knowen good battery. Ithink its the starter draging but is there something else I should look at its worse when engine is hot.

If you can move shaft side to side a 1/4" & brushes are also bad,it's probably quicker & easier to buy a new starter, check a local dealer in your area and see if repair parts are even avail & cost of same, see what dealer wants for a new one, then check around on ebay & mower parts dealers online.

Right now it sounds like you have bad brushes or possibly worn bearings in starter or starter drive, before removing starter & dissassembling, check several other things, remove both plugs & turn eng over by hand, same should turn over freely,if not check that belts for trans & mower are fully disengaging motor drive pulley,if belts disengaged & eng not spinning free, then you have a mech problem in eng,if eng does spin free check out starter.

Another thought is the valve clearance is too great. and the starter cant' crank the engine over compression.

I've never seen this happen on a Briggs opposed but it can be a problem on their V-twins.

Also, does the starter gear slide freely up and down its spiral on the starter shaft? The starter gets a lttle edge if it can already be turning when the load of the engine comes on it.

One thing I witnessed on a V-twin: The starter gear was binding in the ring gear on the flywheel to the point it took all the starter's power to force them to mesh and turn.
