I have a 1994 mtd with a 16hp twin (vertical shaft) briggs engine. It is now making some tapping noises from the engine. My guess is the top of the engine is where the noise is coming from. It only noticeable at idles or when the oil gets hot. What is causing this and any idea's on how to fix it? Any help would be great. Mike

If this is a L-head Briggs, in most cases these motors create alot of carbon bild-up under the heads. This is were I would start. Remove both of the heads and clean off all the carbon on top of the piston and on the head. You will have to get two new head gaskets because they are made of and aluminun and will tear. We own a small engine repair shop and I have done plenty of these and this usually cures the problem. If that isn"t it could be something internal. Good luck.
