Looking at a Sears Garden tractor - don't have the model number yet. Guy says its a 1988 (or so) model that has the 422400 Briggs twin 18 hp horizontal shaft engine and the 3 speed with a high/low (six speed total). Would this be as good as the old Sears Suburban models - the "modern" equivilent?

I talked to him today and will call him tonight when he's off work to get the model number.

He claims the engine was overhauled a couple years ago - any defects in this version? It appears that its pressure lubed with a filter.

I bought one about three years ago. Pretty much worn out then. Mowed three big yards for two years before an electrical problem burned up the diodes in the charging system. The only problem I had with the engine was the exhaust valve seats coming out. Well worth the $ 30.00 I paid for it. Ted.

Its model #917.255919. Its not the pressure lubed engine but he does have the shop receipt for the work done, new over sized piston & rings, valves, oil seals and gasket kit. Shop bill was $290 and he removed the engine and installed it about 4 years ago.

I really like the old Sears Suburbans, they are simple to work on and easy to repair. I have 1 of each year from 1964 to 1970. But along about 1971, they changed from metal grill and dash to a plastic or fiberglass, and they break up a lot. I retrofit a 18 hp Briggs twin to my 1967 Suburban, and with a 48" deck, it "really gets with it." So what you are looking at would be powerful and dependable, but consider carefully the "trim quality."
