Electric Mower clutch....seems to engage"violently",even at moderate RPM.Sounds like deck is gonna blow to pieces initially.Deck is correctly mounted, belt newish(correct)and properly routed, pulleys, idlers etc in good shape,no friction or binding on spindles.Maybe I'm just not used to electrics?

I've got a 40 year old Cub Cadet with a real PTO clutch built by International. It is manual but engages like a Silver Ghost. I have an 2003 MTD with a manual deck "clutch" that will rip your arm off. Does yours have a real clutch or just an electrically actuated spring loaded tensioner like my manual? If it is relying on belt slippage for initial clutch action, I have no doubt that it snatches just as you describe. Took 2 seasons to crater the belt and MTD wants almost as much as the serpentine on a Lincoln Town Car. Guess what? It is only available from MTD!

Check Gates/Carquest for your MTD Belt.Their "Bladerunner" series is supposed to be exact match w/OEM Mfr belts. Also Google belt number on line as,MTD now uses a contracted parts warehouse instead of company store. Often large volume dealers who buy in bulk have "genuwine MTD parts" considerably cheaper than MTD direct or small shops. Not uncommon to save 20-30%.
