We had a Ford 642 Diesel Hydrostatic Drive combine from 1978 untill 2004. It had a 19' bean head and a 4 row wide corn head. The new owner used it last fall to harvest wheat & soybeans. It was a 1977 model, it was a dealer demonstrator when we bought it in 1978. It had a "row finder" on the corn head. Once you got it going down the rows it would steer itself until it got to the other end of the field. It was a good machine, but I sure like my 1985 JD 7720 Titan II a lot better!

I started loving the Ford 642 when I was 11 years old. Three weeks ago I bought my first 642 to do custom harvesting with. I'm 17 years old now and will own my 642 for as long as I live. The last year the 642 was produced was 1979. It was mfg by Claas in Germany. It's equivelent to the Claas Dominator 85 combine. My opinion, the Ford 642 is one of the best combines I've ever been around. The 642 combines sure are rare but excelent machines if I say so. I unhid my e-mail adress if you would like to talk about the 642. It's always nice to hear about a nother 642 combine.

Around this area of south cental Minnesota there were a fair number of 622 and 642 Ford combines as there was a good Ford dealer in New Ulm, MN. Another reason is that in the late 1970s you had to wait a year or two to get a new John Deere, IH, or Gleaner combine because of the commodity price boom at that time; the demand for name brand farm euipment exceeded the supply. You could get a new Ford Combine in a few months time back then. Years later the dealer traded quite a few 642s in on other euipment. They had no resale value so he parted them out and scrapped the non saleable parts. After Ford discontinued the combines, he took on the Claas dealership. I think he only sold two. The "Boom" was over and new combines of other brands were plentiful again. Although the 642 was a good machine, their cornheads and bean heads could not compare with John Deere's 40 series cornheads or 200 series flex platforms.

My farm had a 642 combine for several years. The motor and cooling system was a limiting factor in the machine that we had, but it had very good separating power. We used JD heads on the machine which was a great match for it and were designed better. It would be great to put a nice set of duals on this combine and re-power it with a cummins or cat motor and add a grain tank extension...
