I've seen it recommended to use a flail mower instead of a brush hog on heavy cover crop like sorghum/sudan etc. before plowing it under. Can anyone tell me, are there different kind of flails that can handle this or are they only for light cutting as above? Any advice appreciated.

Somebody told me that the Ford flail mowers are made by Bush Hog. Don't know it to be a fact.

The main thing with a flail mower is to not use it as a brush hog. It will cut up small sticks and brush, but stumps and heavy brush will do a number on it. Even if you lift up the mower, there's a chance of snagging the roller on a stump; the roller is a very expensive piece of pipe.

Some of the Ford mowers are reversible, I don't know about your 917. For normal mowing, the cutter shaft should turn the same direction as your tires. This will pick up the grass that your tires have run over for a clean cut. The reverse direction is for mulching leaves and trash.

mott flail mowers are made by the alamo co in seguin, texas. ford/new holland flail mowers are built for new holland by another company. both are quality machines however i would recommend the mott. the main problems with any flail mower is the rear roller. it turns slowly but sets down in the dirt and the bearings take a beating. check for bearing wear often and grease them daily. the problem with frames cracking is usually associated with using a flail mower in place of a brush hog. a flail mower, whether fine or coarse cut, is a finish mower and not designed to cut the pasture

My experience with the Ford mower has been to use it in place of a finish mower. It gives you a semi-quality cut similar to an athletic field. I went to the flail mower to speed up my mowing over the 5 hours per week with a Wheelhorse. The frame cracked, but it was never abused or used in lieu of my brush hog. The cracks that develop are due to fatigue at the weak point on the hitch configuration.

I have a 5' Ford flail mower (model 917). It works well. The only problem I have experienced is that it develops stress fractures at the back of the unit. There is an arm that runs from the top link down to a bracket welded to the back of the mower: The cracks start around the weld at the base of this bracket and spread down the back of the mower. I have to weld these cracks once or twice each season. I mow approximately three acres each week with it.
