Hello! New here and have a JD 420W. Sure know less than I should about it. My first question...

What are the recommend fluids for the hydrolic system and the tractor's transmission? I need to top both of these off...

More complicated questions to follow... :)

Thanks in advance, appreciate the help...

Here's a link to a page on my website. It's the lube chart for the 420 out of the manual. It might help you till you get your manual.

Detergent multiweight engine oil is fine. E.G. 10W30 or 15W40. Either GL1 or GL4-Marine in the transmisison and finals.

I recently ask a question about oils for my JD "58 420u. What I got out of it was this

Steering Housing - GL1 140 or if it is empty use Corn Head Grease (I used GL1 90)
Final Drive - GL1 140 (I used GL1 90, couldn"t find GL1 140 at time of oil change)
Transmission-Differential - GL1 140 (I used GL1 90)
Power Shaft - GL1 140 (I used GL1 90)
Crankcase - SAE 10W-30 non-detergent or 10w or 30w non-detergent motor oil (depending on season)
Touch-O-Matic - 10w non-detergent motor oil

Good luck

Jim, The 420 manual says SAE 90 for transmission and SAE 10W or 5W-20 for touch-o-matic. I use straight 30W in mine. Do not use hydralic oil.

Thanks! I appreciate it! I'll top it off... the touch-o-matic was acting a bit sluggish and the tranny was getting hard to shift. I'm getting a manual soon, but this gives me a leg up until it arrives. I love this little tractor, and will count on it for my post hole digging and mowing this spring.

Darn if I didn't have another problem today... now I think the starter died or something in the linkage... pull the starter and nothing... It sounded yesterday as if it was having some trouble engaging and now seems to have died. Checked and charged the battery but I don't get any response or sound at all when pulling the starter knob.

Any thoughts? Don't worry, I'll get up to speed soon...

1. you should use GL-1 in the tranny and final drives. As for the hydraulic system3m, DO NOT use detergent oil. Detergent oil will mix with moisture in the air and cause foaming.

2. These Dubuque tractors are noted for the starter drive gear binding and jamming up. Can you turn the engine with the fan? Or can you move it in high gear? If no, then loosen the starter and back it out and the gear should release. A weak battery will cause this to happen. The crank always stops in the same position, so the ring gear wears in one position.

On Tuesday I'll check the starter gear for binding and the switch for burnt contacts. Up until I charged the battery, it was pretty weak and sluggish with the turn-over, so this is a good line of investigation.

I'll also drain and replace the fluids... gosh knows what was in the tranny and hydro system and I don't want to contaminate the new with the old.

Finally, should I be using some sort of additive to the unleaded gas I have to buy? I'm just using the lowest grade at the pump...

You folks are helping a bunch!

Regards to all,

Jim Arthurs

Remove the starter switch, the part on the outside of your starter with the spring loaded button. check the contact points, this is a common problem to have the points burnt up. Unless the button on the starter motor is burned away, it's a quick, cheap, repair.
